A FRIENDLY WAY TO REMOVE RUST
If you don't like the idea of using a steel wire brush or a sandblaster to clean rusted
parts, try the VINEGAR method. The only thing is, you need a tank, tray, pan or
whatever to hold the items to be derusted in. Smaller rusty things are good
candidates for a vinegar swim. If you are patient enough all rust will be
dissolved right to the bare metal without any aditional damage.
These bolts where mounted in a wooden garden fence hinge for 15 years and
over the years corroded badly. I cleaned them off by using a strong vinegar.
It took about a day to get all the crud off and as you can see they look sort
of an archaeoligic find now. The vinegar etched away all the deep rust
and left a moonlike surface. It was not my intention to reuse these
fasteners, I just wanted to show how well vinegar eats away rust.
For best results it is important to degrease the items first!
